Cracked, sagging, or rotting sections. Wood doors rot at the bottom rail where snow sits against them, and steel doors crack at the hinge points once they've flexed enough. Neither one is a repair — the panel is the door's structure.

Dents you look at every single day. A backed-into panel doesn't stop the door working, but it's the first thing anyone sees when they pull into your driveway. That's a real reason to replace, and nobody should talk you out of it.

The door isn't insulated and your garage is attached. An uninsulated door on an attached garage bleeds heat all winter, and it's worse if there's a bedroom or bonus room above it. Insulated doors are the single easiest comfort upgrade most homes have left.

The door is older than twenty years and still has one spring. Older single-spring setups, thin panels, and no safety reverse were normal decades ago. If your door predates the safety features you'd expect today, replacement buys you more than looks.
